Background

After only two Italian Scuderia Ferrari and Maserati, as well as two teams participated with private cars in the race at the season opener in Argentina, the number of participating teams and drivers increased significantly during the Monaco Grand Prix in 1956.

Ferrari put only the new Ferrari D50 one, for the four regular driver Juan Manuel Fangio, Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso and Peter Collins. Maserati went compared to previous race with a significantly lower number of cars at the start. Stirling Moss, Jean Behra and Cesare Perdisa started for the team. Training

The training was previously dominated as the Grand Prix of Argentina in 1956 by Fangio. He put his Ferrari with a time of 1:44,0 on the pole position and was more than half a second faster than his former teammate Moss in the Maserati.

Race

The race was marked by the battle between Ferrari and Maserati. Moss and Castellotti outdated Fangio in the first lap and then fought a duel, in which Moss kept the lead and Fangio Castellotti overtook again. This duel allowed Moss to expand its leadership in the first round for more than five seconds.

In the second lap of the race Fangio drove in the curve " St. Devote " into the barriers and blocked this short track. Several cars were trying to avoid him, Musso and Schell did not succeed this and they collided. For both the race was finished with it, during which Fangio drove on with the slightly damaged Ferrari. Lying on position four he started to catch up to the leaders.

After the accident of Schell retired on lap 13 and the second from Vanwall, Trintignants car overheated and was not able to continue the race. The podium was completed by Behra, who retained the lead in the drivers' standings with one point ahead of Fangio.
