In addition to Collins and Mike Hawthorn Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips drove for Ferrari.

While B.R.M. and Vanwall with an unchanged driver line was launched, there were changes at Lotus and Cooper. Ian Burgess drove his first Formula 1 race for Cooper, Lotus debuted Alan Stacey. Training

The training for the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1958 was balanced between the top teams. Five different cars qualified on the first five starting positions, fastest driver was Moss in the Vanwall. For Vanwall, this was the third pole position of the season, Moss for the first one. In addition to Moss, Harry Schell qualified in BRM for the first row, Roy Salvadori Cooper was third. In fourth place, with a second off the pole time, Hawthorn, Moss biggest rival in the battle for the drivers' title qualified. Allison, who drove the same time as Hawthorn, was fifth, as he set his fastest time after Hawthorn. Once again he proved that the older Lotus 12 was faster than its successor, the Lotus 16, for Hill qualified only 14th place, Stacey, however, was even last on the grid.

In midfield Collins sixth place ahead of Lewis -Evans on Vanwall and Jean Behra on BRM Moss teammate Tony Brooks and Cooper - driver Jack Brabham completed the top ten. Best rider of those with private cars Trintignant was to start in 12th place for the team Ecclestone both Bueb and Fairman qualified. Bernie Ecclestone himself drove no time in training, left his car Fairman and finished after his brief career as a driver. He focused in the following decades to his role as team manager.

Race

The starting duel Collins decided for themselves, starting from sixth, he overtook five opponents in the very first lap of the race and led the race then on to the finish line. Moss finished after the first lap of the race in second place, which dueled for position three to Hawthorn, Brooks, Schell and Salvadori. In the following rounds, Collins sat continually on his opponent, behind him lay Moss before Hawthorn, during which Schell and Salvadori lost the connection to the first three cars.

Subsequently, technical problems with the car from Lotus began to appear, Hill retired on lap 17 from Stacey followed just two laps later. On lap 19 strike the transmission of Bueb, which the team of Ecclestone did not bring a car to the finish. In the same round Behra ran over a rabbit crossed the line and began thus an a puncture that forced him to an early end of the race. The loss series was then continued in round 25, Moss suffered two lying position on an engine failure.

Due to the failure of Moss Collins drove a ungefährdetes race to number one, behind him was his teammate Hawthorn, however a few laps later a pit stop needed to replenish oil. Lewis -Evans had fought his way up to third place, however, this position became less Salvadori. Hawthorn came after his pit stop slightly ahead of Salvadori back on the track, he held second place, however, until the end of the race, as Salvadori has had to say in a duel with Lewis Evans. With Burgess, Gerini, Bonnier and trips eliminated from further four drivers, only nine riders reached the finish.

For Collins, it was the third and final victory of his career. A race later, the Grand Prix of Germany 1958, he crashed fatally. For Ferrari it was the second win in a row, but the last in the Formula 1 season 1958. Moreover, this was the last victory for the tire manufacturer Englebert. Ferrari ended with the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1958 a winning streak of six consecutive victories at this track, which began in 1951 with the first Ferrari victory of their team history at the Grand Prix of Great Britain. The next victory at Silverstone Ferrari reached again until decades later, when Alain Prost Grand Prix of Great Britain won in 1990.

Hawthorn had in the target 24 seconds behind Collins, took over with two position but the lead in the drivers' standings. The additional point for driving the fastest lap thus Hawthorn extended his lead on Moss on seven points. Collins improved thanks to a victory at number three. Salvadori completed the podium, his first of two podium finishes. Lewis -Evans in fourth and fifth place Schell also received points. As in the previous race, Brabham missed scoring points with just under six position. In the constructors' championship all rankings remained unchanged, Ferrari built the lead to 11 points on Vanwall from.
