Background

The Grand Prix of Canada in 1967, held for the first time as a Formula 1 race. Between the date of late August and the next world championship race in the U.S. was the Italian Grand Prix, so the teams had to commute this year two times between North America and Europe.

The top teams Lotus, Brabham and Ferrari went on with the race for several unchanged driver line-up, with Lotus in addition to the local guest driver Eppie Wietzes represented a third factory cars available and this therefore allowed his Grand Prix debut.

Bruce McLaren occurred after a few appearances as a teammate of Dan Gurney in his Eagle team for the first time since the Grand Prix of the Netherlands again with his own team. The reason for this step was the completion of the new model McLaren M5A.

Since Pedro Rodríguez had suffered a broken leg in a Formula 2 race at the Autodromo di Pergusa in Enna, he was represented in the Cooper works team of Richard Attwood.

The two U.S. guest starter Tom Jones and Mike Fisher came forward this weekend in privately-entered each race car for the first time for a Grand Prix. In addition, the Canadian Al Pease played his first Formula 1 race.

Training

As mentioned several times in this season once again dominated the factory Lotus of Jim Clark and Graham Hill the training. They shared with the then Denis Hulme leading in the World Cup on the front row. This was followed by Chris Amon and Dan Gurney in series two to Bruce McLaren, Jack Brabham and Jochen Rindt.

Race

In the race first took over Clark in rainy conditions the lead ahead of Hulme, Hill and Brabham. In the fourth round Hulme overtook the leading Clark, while Brabham past came almost simultaneously on Hill to third place.

McLaren's new own design turned out in the wet conditions than competitive. On the fifth lying he fell because of a spin briefly back, but fought his way up to the 13th round back up to third place forward. On lap 22 he finally walked past Clark and assumed a second place. As the track dried out gradually, McLaren lose his own advantages, so first of Clark and a short time later Brabham again passed by the New Zealanders.

In the 58th round Clark regained the lead of Hulme, while it started to rain again. He defended the top position until the 68th round, when he retired due to an engine failure. Around the same time Hulme was overtaken by Brabham. The team then celebrated a superior double victory before the lapped Dan Gurney finished third, who had to complete a total of four pit stops.

For the four comers the weekend was unsatisfactory. Tom Jones missed the qualification and Eppie Wietzes was disqualified during the race due to claiming foreign aid. Al Pease had to pick walking a battery to the box and install them by hand in his broken-down car before he could continue. He came by with such a large down on the winner, that he was not considered. Mike Fisher was charged with nine laps behind the winner eleventh and thus the last of the standings.
