1972 1000 km Buenos Aires

The ninth 1000km race of Buenos Aires took place on January 9, 1972 held at the Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez Alfredo and was the first championship round of the World Sportscar Championship this year.

The race

With the 1000 km race from Buenos Aires began in January 1972, the World Sportscar Championship in 1972. At the beginning of a new sporting and technical regulations came into force. The most important innovation was the limitation of the displacement of the sports car group 5 to 3 liters. This race cars like the Porsche 917, the Ferrari 512S and the Lola T70 could no longer be used. However, the new rules allowed Formula 1 technology in endurance racing. This had an effect on the engine of many participants and allowed the use of the Cosworth V8 engine. Since the V12 engine of Matra only had 3 liter engine capacity, the Matra MS670 were now among the favorites of the race. Ferrari had already developed in 1971 with the Ferrari 312PB a 3-liter prototype.

In Buenos Aires Matra was missing, making the decision between the Italian team Ferrari and Alfa Romeo fell. After 1000 -km race distance Scuderia celebrated a double victory.
