1974 FIFA World Cup qualification
For the World Cup tournament in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1974, a total of 99 teams had reported, including
- 33 teams from Europe
- 10 teams from South America
- 14 teams from North and Central America
- 24 teams from Africa
- 18 teams from Asia / Oceania
As defending champions Brazil and as the host of the German national football team were directly qualified and the World Cup was held with 16 teams were available for the remaining 97 teams 14 free finals spaces available. For those who qualify:
* Chile was explained in the intercontinental play-off against the team of the Soviet Union as the winner, as the USSR did not compete in Chile.
Although Venezuela, Jamaica, Madagascar, Gabon, India, Sri Lanka and the Philippines not competed, took a total of 90 teams participated in the qualifying matches, which again meant a record number of participants.

From Europe to 32 teams for the qualification for the 1974 World Cup signed up. The Federal Republic of Germany qualified automatically as hosts of the tournament. The remaining teams were divided into nine groups, namely into five groups of four and four groups of three teams. From the Groups 1-8 each of the first place winner for the World Cup finals, the winner of Group 9 had two play-off games against the winner of the South Group 3 contest qualified.
Austria failed in Group 1 against Sweden, Switzerland failed in Group 2 to Italy. The East won the Group 4 and was able to qualify ahead of Romania. In group 3, the Netherlands for 36 years qualified for the first time in a World Cup, but only on goal difference against Belgium. The greatest sensation was Poland. The Olympic champion from 1972 switched from England. Thus, the World Champion from 1966 since his first participation in 1950 had to watch at the World Cup for the first time.

The Soviet Union thus qualified for the play-off games against Chile.
South American zone / CONMEBOL
Nine teams entered the qualification. Brazil qualified automatically as defending champions. The remaining teams were divided into three groups, two groups included three teams, the group 3, only two teams. Their winner had to play against the winner of the European Group 9. Venezuela withdrew its message back. It qualified Uruguay, Argentina and Chile.

North, Central American and Caribbean Zone / CONCACAF
The 14 teams entered were in the First Round first divided into six groups (two groups of three and four groups with two teams ). The group winners then played in a group in the second round, which took place in Port -au -Prince in Haiti to win the group and qualify for the World Cup finals in Germany. Host Haiti was able to prevail and qualify for the World Cup.

Asian Zone / AFC and Oceanian Zone / OFC
Total reported 14 Asian teams for the World Cup qualifiers. There were also with Australia and New Zealand, two teams from the Oceania zone.
First, the 16 participants were divided into four groups (AD) divided with four teams each. Since the Philippines waived participation, group A comprised only three teams. Subsequently, the group winners and runners-up of the groups A and B were playing in the semi-finals and finals of a playoff participants. For groups C and D, only the group winners played the final participation. The winner of the playoffs finally qualified for the World Cup finals.

India India decided not to participate. In their place, on 24 March 1973 approved ( almost two years after the deadline ) North Korea by FIFA.

Australia therefore took part in the playoffs against the winner of the A and B groups.

Thus, Australia qualified for the World Cup finals.
African Zone / CAF
From Africa, 24 nations competed for a finals place. After Madagascar and Gambia had withdrawn, were 22 teams left. The qualification was first played in three rounds in the knockout system, then the three remaining teams played in a group, in home and away matches to qualify. Zaire finally managed to qualify for the finals of the World Cup.

Intercontinental Play-Off Europe - South America
The Soviet Union joined because of the events in the 1973 coup in Chile, which was supported by the CIA, not the return match in Chile in the Estadio Nacional de Chile. 30,000 spectators came to Chile sole and scored after a minute it 1-0. Subsequently, the "game" canceled because lack of participating Soviet player no re- offense was possible. FIFA awarded the match 2-0, Chile qualified for the World Cup finals.
