Background

As the representative for Jean -Pierre Jarier who continued to lack due to illness, returned Derek Daly, who had actually adopted after the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 2 into Formula 1 back. Otherwise, the same field of riders stepped up to Austria -GP, and he had two weeks earlier contested the Grand Prix of Germany.

The ATS Racing team brought under the leadership of new Team Manager Vic Elford a new car called ATS D3 at the start, which was piloted by regular driver Hans -Joachim Stuck. Keke Rosberg joined Walter Wolf Racing with the equally new Wolf WR9.

Training

René Arnoux reached the first pole position of his Formula 1 career with the turbo -powered Renault RS10. He pointed Alan Jones, the winner of the previous race in second place. Followed by Jean -Pierre Jabouille the second Renault works driver alongside Niki Lauda. Gilles Villeneuve and Clay Regazzoni formed the third row.

Race

After a very good start Villeneuve went to Jones, Lauda and Arnoux lead. Jabouille, which had fallen due to clutch problems shortly after the release of the race to ninth, fought his way up to the 13th round back up to second place forward. The leader at that time was already no longer Villeneuve, but Jones, who had overtaken the Canadians in the fourth round.

As Jabouilles coupling in the 15th round finally failed, took over his compatriot and team-mate Arnoux him second place. Five laps from the end of the race but it had to go to the box due to lack of fuel and consequently fell back to sixth place. Behind the new winner Jones and second-placed Jacques Laffite Villeneuve finished in third place, after he had overtaken on the last lap Jody Scheckter. Regazzoni came in fifth.
