Background

Alfa Romeo participated for the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix in 1951 not only as an engine supplier, but again, as a work team with vehicles in Formula 1 Bruno Giacomelli was hired to the Alfa Romeo 177 the team Autodelta, which the factory inserts the Italian manufacturer to conducted, piloting.

Due to some problems with the new car Mario Andretti decided to reinstate the sophisticated Lotus 79. His team-mate Carlos Reutemann refused the new Lotus 80 from generally.

Since one of the two copies of the new McLaren M28 was severely damaged in an accident while testing in advance of the Grand Prix of John Watson, Patrick Tambay had to contest the race weekend with the M26.

Training

Once again dominated the Ligier - pilot Jacques Laffite and Patrick Depailler training. For the second row, the two emerging drivers Nelson Piquet and Alan Jones qualified in front of Mario Andretti and Gilles Villeneuve. The teammates of the latter two, Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemann, followed in series four.

Among the four pilots who could not qualify for one of the 24 starting places is counted with Patrick Tambay also a driver of a former world champions.

Race

While Laffite dropped back to fourth place, Depailler first took over the lead from Piquet and Jones.

In the second round Jody Scheckter collided with Clay Regazzoni. Was also involved in the accident Gilles Villeneuve. While Regazzoni for the race was over, both Ferrari drivers were able to continue. Villeneuve, however, had to go to the box, for replacement of the damaged front of his car.

In the fourth round Laffite took the third place of Piquet. Meanwhile overtook Scheckter fifth-placed Andretti and a little later also Piquet. Until the 19th round of Laffite worked up to the top forward. From this position he was four laps later supplanted by Jones. In this promising position lying but the Australians difference in the 40th round out due to an electrical defect.

Depailler, who had again taken the lead after the failure of Jones, was eliminated in the 46th round after a mistake. Until the 54th round then again his team-mate Laffite took the top position. From this he was however ousted in round 54 by Scheckter.

Villeneuve was up to the penultimate round in third place, but then fell out due to lack of fuel and was classified seventh due to its distance traveled. In third place was ultimately Didier Pironi. Carlos Reutemann, Riccardo Patrese and John Watson followed the fourth to sixth place.
