Background

After a year break, in which the Brazil GP had taken place on the track Jacarepaguá, they returned to São Paulo. In the meantime, some safety devices were added or replaced. The asphalt had also renewed but similar to many bumps as in the years before, which was criticized by some drivers.

The same participants who had previously denied two weeks, the opening race in Argentina, traveled also to the second world championship race. Only in the area of vehicles, there were a few changes. So Patrick Tambay had to resort to the older McLaren M26, since his real car of the current type M28, was not operational due to damage that resulted from the accident at the start in Buenos Aires. In Brabham contrast, there was the first time for both factory riders the opportunity to pilot the new BT48.

Training

Again, the training of the two pilots Jacques Laffite Ligier and Patrick Depailler dominated. The two Lotus factory driver Carlos Reutemann and Mario Andretti occupied in the starting lineup the second row in front of the two Ferrari of Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter.

Race

Behind Laffite, who took the lead, Reutemann moved shortly past Depailler. Even during the first round he had the second position, however, return it to him, and even fell behind Andretti back to fourth place. Emerson Fittipaldi was meanwhile after a passing against Jody Scheckter in fifth place. As Andretti Lotus because of misfires was slower, the Brazilian was able to make a further position in the second round.

While Fittipaldi pressure on Reutemann exercised, Didier Pironi passed by Scheckter.

In the 22nd round Fittipaldi had to make due to a loose wheel a pit stop. The two Ferrari headed for their boxes to let mount new tires. You occupied at the end of the race, the fifth and sixth place behind Laffite, Depailler, Reutemann and Pironi.

These were the only two in the 1976 lasted until 1996 Ligier team history.
