Rise

Before the season, there was no clear favorite on the rise. The two relegated from the Bundesliga, 1 FC Nuremberg and Kickers Offenbach, were difficult to assess because of the large personnel upheaval. The previous year's third and fourth - MSV Duisburg and Kassel Hesse had been forced to give up their top players. In fact, the ascent question was completely open until the last match day. The thrilling four-way battle for promotion to the Bundesliga coined this season, in which no association was able to sell preliminary decision. On the final day there was even a direct clash between league leaders KSV Hessen Kassel and the 1st FC Nuremberg, who was in second for the first time in the season, at the Municipal stadium in Nuremberg. Third-placed Hannover 96 Hertha BSC and the fourth-placed 1 FC Saarbrücken against Wattenscheid 09 had mild home games, they won both. The Nuremberg were therefore able to ensure only by their 2-0 win to climb, already a draw Kassel would have been promoted.

Thus, since the 17th Round Kassel stood at the end of the season for the first time not on a promotion place and was as last season in fourth place. Nuremberg, however, managed to carve out yet, even though the club was plunged even to the last place during the first round and soon after the " October Revolution " against coach Heinz Higher several key players (eg Rudolf Kargus ) were dismissed. However, this could be replaced by young players, including the later national player Hans Dorfner, Dieter Eckstein and Stefan Reuter. Also the rise of Hannover 96 was unexpected, since coach Werner Biskup had to start the season with a full squad of 14 players only. But the veterans Franz Gerber and Karsten Surmann dominated similar in Nuremberg Jugendstil. Among the players 19 activated dominated young players like Michael Gue, Frank Hartmann, Bastian Hellberg, Maximilian Heidenreich or Matthias Kuhlmey.

Descent

Bundesliga relegation Kickers Offenbach could not cope with the major personnel upheaval unlike Mitabsteiger 1 FC Nuremberg. In addition, burdened with the loss of two plus points for violating DFB licensing requirements Offenbacher dismounted at the end of the season. So they were the first club, which was passed on sporting merit directly from the amateur league in the camp. In addition, the newcomers St Pauli and Buerstadt and Ulm dismounted. St. Pauli could still hope to end of the season to avoid relegation, as the DFB Hertha BSC had the license revoked, the decision was revised for a instance however.

Top scorers

Top Scorer of the season was Manfred Burgsmüller from SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen with 29 goals.
