Background

The only change compared to the Grand Prix of Austria, which had taken place the previous weekend was the fact that Tyrrell henceforth both pilots with the 014 endowed, who had a Renault turbo engine.

Andrea de Cesaris, who was dismissed after his accident on the Ring of Austria his team boss Guy Ligier could still compete one last time for the team.

Training

Nelson Piquet qualified Friday for the pole position ahead of Keke Rosberg, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Teo Fabi and Patrick Tambay formed the third row in front of Nigel Mansell and Thierry Boutsen.

Since it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday and therefore none of the pilots could undercut its respective best time from Friday, this order remained.

Race

Due to a puncture while driving to the grid Patrick Tambay had to start from the pit lane.

Although both Piquet and Boutsen choking off their engines at the start, there was no collision. Rosberg took the lead ahead of Senna, Prost and Fabi. The Frenchman took over in the second round by Fabi. His team-mate Niki Lauda three laps later followed him and thus took over fourth place.

Due to technical failure of Rosberg took Prost, who had previously overtaken Senna on lap 20 the top. Lauda fell under the back by a pit stop to eighth place, but fought his way back to within seven laps to third place forward. He now profited in turn from the fact that both Michele Alboreto and Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost were headed their boxes and took the lead, as Prost's stop delayed due to a tire problem. In the 48th round of cheers came back to Senna into second place.

During the final laps the leaders Lauda parted only a few tenths of a second from his teammate Prost, who led the World Championship standings. The two McLaren crossed the finish line at a distance of 0.232 seconds. Ayrton Senna was just ahead of Michele Alboreto third after the car had two touches in the duel for the podium in the last round. Elio de Angelis and Nigel Mansell took places five and six.
