First in the season 1987 /88 German Bundesliga and thus German master of men was Werder Bremen.
Season overview
After three vice - championships in the last five years Werder Bremen won the German championship in the 1987/88 season. While Bremer were mainly known for their attacking football in the years before, so it was this year, the strong defense with only 22 goals conceded, which was crucial to winning the title. Already three games before the end of the season was the SV Werder established as a master. Coach Otto Rehhagel coined the term "controlled offensive ". Defending champions Bayern Munich, the first FC Cologne, VfB Stuttgart and 1.FC Nuremberg qualified for the UEFA Cup. In the relegation between the SV Waldhof Mannheim and the third in the Bundesliga 2, the SV Darmstadt 98, had to make a third game. This ended in a draw after extra time. Only in the penalty shoot-out, the decision was made in favor of SV Waldhof.
