Background

Since Jean Alesi again his title aspirations in F3000 preferred over the Formula 1 involvement in Tyrrell, his cockpit was adopted a second time by Johnny Herbert.

Bertrand Gachot was at Onyx replaced by the Finnish rookie JJ Lehto after he publicly criticized the team.

Training

Yannick Dalmas and Nicola Larini were excluded from participating in the race weekend, because of noncompliant changes have been observed on their race car at scrutineering.

Between the pole sitter Ayrton Senna and his leading in the world championship teammate Alain Prost, the two Ferrari drivers Gerhard Berger and Nigel Mansell for the grid positions two and three qualified. Favored by special qualifying tires from Pirelli reached Pierluigi Martini Minardi in the fifth place before Williams driver Riccardo Patrese.

Race

Already at the start Senna lost the first place to Berger and finally in the eighth round also ranked second on the team-mate Mansell. This displaced Berger on lap 24 of the top.

As Mansell pulled into the pit lane after the 39th round, Martini took the lead for one lap. Mansell drove meanwhile past his pit crew. When he realized this mistake, he put the car in reverse and parked one in this way prior to his box, giving a clear rule violation constituted.
