Background

The Onyx team pulled completely back from Formula 1. Gregor Foitek had previously announced his retirement during training for the Hungarian Grand Prix two weeks. JJ Lehto was initially no new job and thus had to participate in the remaining races of the 1990 season without. The rest of the field remained unchanged.

Training

Due to the withdrawal of the Onyx team Ligier participation in the pre-qualification from then on remained spared. Also benefited from the loss of two competitors Bertrand Gachot, which it first succeeded in the current season to reach the regular qualifying with the Coloni C3B.

The two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger dueled for the pole position that ultimately went with a shorter by about six tenths of a second lap time on Senna. It was followed by Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen and Alessandro Nannini before Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet.

Race

While Senna took the lead ahead of Berger, Aguri Suzuki collided with Nelson Piquet. This came then together with Nigel Mansell, whose car collided head-on against the pit wall and the track thus partially blocked. When trying to avoid this obstacle, the two Lotus team-mate Derek Warwick and Martin Donnelly collided. Later in the first round it was elsewhere to further collision, between Satoru Nakajima and Stefano Modena. Emanuele Pirro and Nicola Larini were prevented by the blockade on Continue. Then decided the stewards to stop the race with the red flag.

Except for Suzuki all drivers in vehicles repaired or T -Cars could participate in the restart. Senna went back in front. Boutsen succeeded but this time to overtake Berger and take second place. Shortly after the race was stopped again after a serious accident by Paolo Barilla in the Eau Rouge, as the debris of his Minardi had spread over the track.

Senna succeeded at the third attempt to start again, to defend its top position. Behind him followed Berger to Prost, Boutsen, Patrese, Nannini, Piquet and Mansell. The latter fell back from now on due to handling problems and abandoned the race after 19 laps.

On lap 14, Prost overtook Berger. Also Boutsen asked for the Austrians, which he took as an occasion to mount it on the box fresh tires. Within a few laps left shortly after, the two Williams drivers made ​​due to technical defects.

Through a pit stop on lap 23 Prost Nannini came to second place. The Frenchman, however, ousted him four rounds later by that position. Thereupon Nannini dueled with Berger for third place, which finally in round 36 led to a collision between the two. Both, however, were able to continue the race. Berger moved to the 41st round of the Italian past, after he had made ​​a small mistake in the Eau Rouge, and thus reached the third place behind Senna and Prost. The finish of the first three corresponded so exactly to the world championship at this time. Piquet crossed the finish line in fifth place behind Nannini. Maurício Gugelmin received sixth the last championship point in the day, was his first of the season at the same time.
