Background

In the list of participants, there were no changes in comparison to the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

Training

Gerhard Berger qualified Riccardo Patrese ago, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Thierry Boutsen and Jean Alesi for the pole position. Alain Prost only reached the 13th place.

Race

After Patrese had initially taken over the top before the first corner, Senna finished the first lap as the leader. His team-mate Berger put down the second round of a McLaren - double guide her. Once, however, he had to make a pit stop on lap 13 due to a tire problem, he came as Zwölftplatzierter back on track. Nelson Piquet was thus before the two Williams and the two Ferrari in second place.

Until the 42nd round of the two Ferrari drivers got to two Williams drivers and to pass Piquet, who were second and third respectively. Benefiting from a slow puncture on Senna's car overtook the two on the leader. On lap 55 there was an exchange of positions between the two, so Prost took the lead, as Senna conditionally dropped back by the bursting of the damaged tire and the race finally had to give up in the pits.

During the final laps Mansell and Berger dueled for third place, with Mansell eventually lay ahead. Alessandro Nannini finished in fourth place ahead of Thierry Boutsen and Nelson Piquet.
