The change from Jean Alesi to Ferrari for next season was officially announced after the signing of Alessandro Nannini had failed. Alesi had originally also concluded a contract with Williams. The British team demanded as compensation a Formula 1 car from Ferrari.

Race

After an accident during the warm-up Satoru Nakajima decided not to participate in the race.

Mansell started badly and turned almost. Since Prost had to dodge, Senna, Berger and Piquet moved past him. Mansell could scarce defend third place compared to Piquet.

Only in the 13th round of cheers could go by Piquet. His behind the leading trio was around five seconds at this time. A further 13 laps he needed to catch up with his teammates Mansell and overtake him.

After most of the pilots had inserted a pit stop to change tires, Senna was before Mansell, Berger, Prost, Nannini and Piquet in the lead. In the 50th round Mansell took the lead position of Senna. With Prost sixth gear was in the meantime failed, so he was worried about being able to finish the race at all. In the course of a lapping maneuver collided Nigel Mansell with Philippe Alliot. While this was eliminated, the leader was able to continue the race virtually unaffected.

Despite the defective gear Prost moved into the 59th round past Berger and brought quickly to the second placed Senna. Then the race has aborted ten laps before the scheduled end due to a collision between Alex Caffi and Aguri Suzuki, as the recovery of Caffi proved to be complicated. Thus Mansell won ahead of Senna, Prost, Berger, Piquet and Nannini.
