Background

Since Johnny Herbert continues participated in Formula 3000 race in Japan, Michael Bartels could make another attempt to qualify as a Paydriver Lotus 102B for a Grand Prix. And there were no changes in the participants compared to the Grand Prix of Germany two weeks earlier.

Training

Ayrton Senna qualified to consider for the pole position in front of the two Williams drivers Riccardo Patrese and Nigel Mansell, despite the difficulties on Friday the grid positions two and three reached.
