Race

Although Modena is a good start succeeded, Senna retained the lead and was not until the checkered flag. In the first corner Berger collided with Piquet. The Basilian resigned immediately. Berger came to the pits to have repairs on his car. As a little later he tried to clean the visor, he rammed in the area of the swimming pool the barriers and retired.

Pierluigi Martini behaved unsportsmanlike by prevented his compatriot Stefano Modena on lapping. He was awarded the first driver in Formula 1 history by a newly introduced rule a 10-second time penalty, which was completed in the pit lane.

In the 30th round of Alain Prost moved past his former teammate Nigel Mansell, thus attaining to fourth place. To a further change took 13 laps later, when Modena engine exploded in the tunnel and Patrese on oil, which thus came to the track, slid off. Thus Senna was a clear margin in the lead before the now second placed Prost and Mansell.

On lap 63 Mansell Prost attacked and overtook him, as it gave way to avoid a collision. Shortly after, the Frenchman, the box had an unscheduled visit. He crossed the finish line in fifth place behind the victorious Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell, Jean Alesi and Roberto Moreno. JJ Lehto, who had been lying for several rounds in sixth place, the goal is not reached due to an engine failure. Instead, his team-mate Emanuele Pirro won the last point of the day.

After four wins in a row Ayrton Senna led the championship at points corresponding to the new rule with 40 points and had 29 points clear of the runner-up Alain Prost.
