Background

For the last two races of the year Ivan Capelli was replaced by Nicola Larini at Ferrari. Jan Lammers returned more than ten years after his last appearance at the Formula 1 Grand Prix of France in 1982 in the Grand Prix scene back to take the place of Karl Wendlinger in March. From the team much-needed sponsorship money, which brought Lammers, had led to this change.

Training

Nigel Mansell completed for the 13th time this season the fastest practice lap. His team-mate Riccardo Patrese qualified for the second place ahead of the two McLaren drivers Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger and Michael Schumacher at Benetton and the two Lotus team-mate Johnny Herbert and Mika Häkkinen.

Due to heavy rain no time improvements were possible during the second qualifying session on Saturday. Thus, most pilots waived participation in this passage.

Race

The first lap of the race ended Mansell already with some 3.1 seconds ahead of his team-mate Patrese. Senna, who was initially in third place, dropped out after two rounds because of an engine failure. His team-mate Berger fell after ten rounds by an unscheduled pit stop behind Schumacher, Herbert and Häkkinen back. Within two rounds had to retire due to gear damage both Schumacher and the following directly before him Herbert.

After driving through the debris that lay after an accident Maurício Gugelmin on the track, Mansell entered a pit stop to let change his tires. However, he was then continued with some 20 seconds ahead of the lead before Patrese and Berger, who had already stopped earlier planned. Martin Brundle, who qualified for the 13th place, at this time was already in fifth place behind Mika Häkkinen. On the sixth Érik Comas followed before Andrea de Cesaris.

In the 36th round Mansell slowed deliberately to allow overtaking his teammate and then to put this under pressure. As already the Grand Prix of Italy, six weeks before he was thereby demonstrating clearly that he was the superior driver of the team. In the 45th round, he dropped out due to an engine failure.

Patrese won the race ahead of Berger and Brundle, who benefited from technical failure Häkkinen. Andrea de Cesaris took fourth place ahead of Jean Alesi and Christian Fittipaldi.
