1996–97 Regionalliga

The season 1996 /97 Regional League was the third season of the Regional as the third- highest division in German football. It was played in four regional scales at 18 teams.

The master of the squadrons west / southwest and south as well as the runner-up of the South Group rose directly on to the 2nd Bundesliga. The master of the squadrons North and Northeast were playing in a relegation from another climber.

Mode

It was played - as in the pre-season - in seasons north, northeast, west / southwest and south. In every season, played 18 teams. As in the previous season had to deliver two playoffs to move up, while the winner of the West/Südwest- and the South Season ascended directly the winners of the North and the Northeast season. This season, the Southern squadron had the fourth promotion spot.

The qualification places for the German Amateur Championship reached the previous year, the loser of the playoff, the third placed the South Season and the second and the third place winner of the West / Southwest Season.

North

The northern group was dominated by Hannover 96, the sovereign prevailed, but subsequently failed in the rise of games at Energie Cottbus. By descent from VfB Lübeck and VfB Oldenburg from the 2nd Bundesliga and the rise of non Hannover 96 had to dismount five instead of three teams.

Relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga

In the Relegation the two masters of the squadrons North and Northeast came together in two games to determine the fourth promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. The first leg ended 0-0 in Hannover, in the second leg victory Cottbus 3-1 and rose to the 2nd Bundesliga.
