1998 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship

The Volleyball World Championship for Men 1998 was held from November 13 to 29 in Japan. Italy won for the third time in a row the title. The Games were held in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Osaka, Chiba, Hamamatsu, Fukuoka, Kobe, Sendai, Sapporo, Kawasaki and Uozu.

Mode

The 24 participants played in the first round in six groups of four. The group winners and runners and the four best third reached the second round, which was played in two groups of eight. The top six teams in each group identified in the second round of the knockout tournaments ranks one through twelve.

Qualification

Japan hosts qualified automatically. The other starting places were awarded in continental qualifying tournaments.

Europe

In the first round, there was a four and three groups of three, from each of which the two best teams reached the second round. There, a triple and five groups of four were formed. Winners of all groups, and the second of the four groups qualified for the World Cup finals. In group 1 ( in Montecatini Terme) to hosts Italy and Turkey prevailed against Belgium and Finland. The German team won in Groningen only against Croatia and the Netherlands and Ukraine had to leave the first places in Group 2. The Poles have qualified at their home tournament in Olsztyn with wins against Hungary and Denmark second in Group 3 behind Russia. In Sofia, Spain became winner of Group 4 hosts before Bulgaria and Slovakia and Romania. In Lamia of Greece hosts finished second in group 5 and sat down with Yugoslavia against France and Sweden. In Group 6 Czech Republic won against Latvia and Portugal.

North and Central America

When qualifying the NORCECA were seven teams in two groups. The group winners qualify directly and were the runners- determined in a playoff round of the third party. In the first group to Canada prevailed in Havana on Cuba, Puerto Rico and Barbados. In the second group, the United States took advantage of the home field advantage in San Antonio to Mexico and Haiti. The duel of runners won Cuba 3-1 and 3-0 against Mexico.

South America

The four teams that competed in South America, played a double round in Santa Fe and Rio de Janeiro. Brazil was unbeaten group winners. Argentina finished because of the better set ratio against Venezuela in second place and qualified also. Peru had no chance with six defeats.

Asia

The five World Cup participants from Asia were determined in three skill groups. In Jeddah South Korea and Thailand prevailed against hosts Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. In Tehran, China and Iran against Kazakhstan were successful. The last place Australia secured in Navoi with wins against Taiwan and Uzbekistan.

Africa

In Africa, the winner of two groups of three qualified for the World Cup. Algeria continued in Tunis against Tunisia and Kenya through. Egypt remained in Kano without dropping a set against Nigeria and Cameroon.
