2000 Canadian Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Canada 2000 was held on 18 June at the Circuit Gilles -Villeneuve in Montreal and was the eighth race of the Formula 1 season 2000. Winner was Michael Schumacher (Ferrari ) in front of Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari) and Giancarlo Fisichella ( Benetton Supertec ).

Background

After the Monaco Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher led the drivers' championship with 12 points, ahead of David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen with 17 points ahead. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 5 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 53 points ahead of Williams - BMW.

With Michael Schumacher ( three times ), Jean Alesi and Häkkinen ( once each ) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free Coulthard posted the fastest time ahead of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. In the second session the first three positions remained unchanged.

Qualifying

In qualifying Michael Schumacher was the fastest pilot who thus took over the pole position. Coulthard was followed in second place ahead of Barrichello.

Warm Up

In the warm-up, there was a double leadership of the Ferrari drivers. Michael Schumacher led the time table in front of Barrichello and Häkkinen.

Race

Shortly before the start of the engine Coulthard died from. The mechanic started the engine again and again Coulthard went from its original starting position in the race. At the start Coulthard came back into the race as the launching of the pole position Michael Schumacher. However, the Ferrari driver pulled over and so kept the lead. Behind the first two several pilots had a bad start, so that Jacques Villeneuve took the third position. From the good start Villeneuve also benefited Barrichello, who was first overtaken by Häkkinen, but in the throng drove back to him and took the fourth position.

Michael Schumacher and Coulthard sat down at the top gradually, since Villeneuve on the third position stayed the rest of the peloton. Häkkinen tried to overtake Barrichello, but was not successful. In the eleventh round Coulthard was punished with a 10 seconds stop-and -go penalty because the mechanics had not timely removed from the car when the engine restarts. He fell back to tenth place and was in a crowd that had formed behind Ricardo Zonta.

After Johnny Herbert had failed on lap 15 with a gearbox failure, Barrichello finally succeeded in the 17th round to go to Villeneuve over. His behind the leading team-mate was already 19 seconds. In lap 24 Coulthard was trying to overtake Jos Verstappen. In this case both touched. Verstappen fell on the 19th, Coulthard back to 12th place. In the same round succeeded Jarno Trulli to overtake Zonta and he took to Heinz- Harald Frentzen. While holding his lead of 20 seconds at the top of Michael Schumacher, Trulli overtook his team mate Frentzen in the 27th round. One lap later succeeded also Hakkinen, Villeneuve to drive over and take the third position. After Michael Schumacher lost to once per round time, the team decided to make a pit stop. Barrichello took the lead with it. Schumacher kept his position ahead of Häkkinen, who caught up. Since it Häkkinen but failed to overtake his rival, he drove in the 42nd round to the pits. In the next round, finally, also graduated from Barrichello and Michael Schumacher his pit stop went away again in the lead. In the meantime, Frentzen, Nick Heidfeld, Alesi and Mika Salo had fallen out with technical problems.

Finally, in the 44th round, it began to rain. Villeneuve and Giancarlo Fisichella came at this time to the box. While Fisichella opted for rain tires, Villeneuve kept dry tires. Häkkinen came to pit again and was after his pit stop for almost a minute behind Michael Schumacher back. Schumacher completed his stop on the next lap and held the lead. Barrichello also came into the pits and had to wait a bit. He fell as a result, behind Fisichella, who took second place, remained, however, ahead of Häkkinen.

After Pedro de la Rosa had retired after a collision with Pedro Diniz, Fisichella made ​​in the 50th round of a mistake and Barrichello took the second place. In the 56th round Verstappen took the fifth place of Trulli. While Barrichello caught up with Michael Schumacher, it came in the 64th round to a duel between Villeneuve and Coulthard. First overtook Villeneuve Coulthard, but was overtaken directly back of Coulthard. The next Überholversuchs Villeneuve he braked so late that he collided with Ralf Schumacher. Both pilots dropped out, just like Marc Gené, who turned in the same round of the track. Coulthard tried his hand to pull over Wurz over. When he touched overtake Wurz, who then had to pit. Coulthard drove on and unlocked Trulli on. Another overtaking him but did not succeed.

Michael Schumacher eventually won the race by a narrow margin on Barrichello. Fisichella was third. The other points were awarded to Häkkinen, Verstappen and Trulli.
