2000 San Marino Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of San Marino 2000 was held on 9 April at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola place and was the third race of the Formula 1 season 2000. Winner was Michael Schumacher ( Ferrari) before Mika Häkkinen (McLaren -Mercedes) and David Coulthard (McLaren -Mercedes).

Background

After the Brazilian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher led the drivers' championship with 12 points, ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 18 points, ahead of Benetton Supertec with 19 points ahead of Jordan - Mugen.

Heinz -Harald Frentzen denied the Grand Prix of San Marino his 100th Grand Prix.

With Michael Schumacher (twice), David Coulthard and Frentzen ( once each ) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In free practice on Friday Michael Schumacher posted the fastest lap ahead of his teammate Barrichello and Coulthard. In Saturday's training Mika Hakkinen took the lead position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Coulthard.

Qualifying

In qualifying Häkkinen scored the pole position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Coulthard.

Warm Up

In the warm-up, there was a double leadership of the McLaren drivers with Hakkinen Coulthard before. Third was Michael Schumacher.

Race

At the start of the race Hakkinen retained the lead ahead of Michael Schumacher. The Ferrari driver had a bad start and had to defend itself against Coulthard. Before Tamburello Coulthard finally had to let Schumacher. Barrichello took advantage of the situation to also drive past Coulthard. Jacques Villeneuve had a good start phase and moved up to fifth place. Behind him were Jarno Trulli and Eddie Irvine. After a few rounds Frentzen and Jenson Button with technical problems, and Marc Gené had to give up after the accident.

A duel between Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher, who were allowed to settle from the remaining riders developed at the tip. Barrichello and Coulthard also formed a group of two that stand out from the other pilots, but could not compete with the best. While both Prost pilots had failed with a hydraulic damage to Häkkinen projection stabilized at Schumacher in three seconds. With a gap of almost 25 seconds Barrichello and Coulthard went at the same time to the box. Since Coulthard completed a shorter stop, he managed to drive past Barrichello. One lap later, the leading pilots came to the box. Hakkinen completed while a shorter pit stop as Michael Schumacher and maintained the lead position. At the same time Coulthard had a temporary technical problem and had to leave Barrichello over again. A little later, the lap times of the McLaren drivers but again stabilized.

Behind the first four pilots Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Mika Salo dueled to the fifth position. At the top Hakkinen retained his lead at first, although he first drove a little slower after a collision with a piece of wreckage. Shortly before Häkkinen's second pit stop, Michael Schumacher managed to reduce the lead initially to two seconds before he lost more seconds by lapping traffic. Since his McLaren rival, however briefly had an electronics problem, he went in the 44th round with a lead of three seconds Michael Schumacher into the pits.

In the next round also Barrichello completed his second pit stop, while Ralf Schumacher failed with a fuel pressure loss. Coulthard was able at that time to have a position in front of Barrichello with good sector times. While Pedro de la Rosa retired after an accident, fell at Michael Schumacher's pit stop in the 49th round the drafts for the Grand Prix victory. Since he had to refuel less fuel, be pit stop was shorter and he came back before Hakkinen on the track. Shortly before the end had to give up in seventh place lying with gearbox problems Trulli.

Schumacher won the race ahead of Häkkinen by a margin of 1.168 seconds. With a significant backlog of more than 50 seconds Coulthard came in third place finish. However, he succeeded in the last rounds Barrichello to distance by about 40 seconds. With one lap behind Villeneuve came in fifth and Salo in sixth place finish.
