Background

After the U.S. Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher was leading the drivers' standings with 52 points ahead of David Coulthard and 59 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 72 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 94 points ahead of Williams - BMW. Michael Schumacher and Ferrari were already established as a world champion.

With Michael Schumacher ( three times) and Mika Hakkinen (twice) were two former winner of this Grand Prix.

Jean Alesi and Häkkinen drove her last Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice session, which consisted of two sessions with a common timing, Alesi drove the fastest time ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Pedro de la Rosa. During the first session Tomáš Enge had an accident in the 130R curve. He was unhurt, but his race car was not repaired in time for the second session.

In the second session, the two Williams - BMW drivers took the lead. Ralf Schumacher drove it faster than Montoya. Behind Coulthard followed in third place.

Qualifying

In qualifying Michael Schumacher secured the pole position in front of Montoya and Ralf Schumacher.

Warm Up

Even in the warm up Michael Schumacher was the fastest. He was followed by Coulthard and Nick Heidfeld.

Race

Michael Schumacher won the race ahead of Montoya and Coulthard. Hakkinen was in his last Grand Prix in fourth. The fastest lap went to Ralf Schumacher.
