The Division was established on December 18, 1871. The preparation of the rod was, however, only on 4 March 1872 and the Division Command had its headquarters in Ulm. With the mobilization of 1914, the 27th Cavalry Brigade, the two Uhlan regiments as cavalry division of 26 ( Uhlan Regiment No. 19) and 27th Infantry Division ( Uhlan Regiment No. 20) was dissolved planned and regulated.

In winter 1916/17 came a new struggle regulation " principles for leadership in the defensive battle " with a new general structure of a division into force. In order to test the structure and simultaneous training of commanders and staff officers the 27th Division (2nd Royal Württemberg ) was determined to " exercise Division ". She led from February to March 1917, the first three courses in Solesmes and the fourth in Valenciennes by.

After the Armistice the remains of the Grand Union marched back into the home where the division was initially demobilized in 1919 and eventually dissolved.
