- 391: On the orders of the Emperor Theodosius I is Christianity the state religion in the Roman Empire. It also abolishes the Panhellenic Olympics, the oracle of Delphi, the mysteries of Eleusis and many other pagan customs, and thus destroys the foundations of pagan beliefs in the east.
- January 17 395: Following the death of emperor Theodosius I, the Roman Empire between his two sons in a Western Roman and Eastern Roman Empire (later the Byzantine Empire ) is divided. Here, the unit is thought but not abandoned. Only later it done the break and the fall of the Western Empire.
