Acer Nethercott

Acer Nethercott Gary ( born November 28, 1977 in Newmarket, † 26 January 2013) was a British coxswain in rowing. He won with the British men's eight an Olympic silver medal in Beijing in 2008 and a bronze medal at the World Rowing Championships in 2007 and twice the Boat Race with the team of Oxford University Boat Club.

Life

Acer Nethercott was born in Newmarket in England and grew up in Hertfordshire. From 1996 he studied at University College, University of Oxford physics and philosophy. He also earned academic degrees Bphil and DPhil in the research field of philosophy of language. Later he worked for the Boston Consulting Group.

In 2010, a malignant brain tumor ( glioblastoma ) was diagnosed with a break in his rowing career, which was treated with surgery and chemotherapy. Nethercott died on January 26, 2013 at the age of 35 years.

Career as a coxswain

Boat Race

Acer Nethercott began rowing at the start of the study in Oxford. But soon it was clear that he would be more successful with his body height as helmsman as rowers. In 2000, he headed the Women 's Boat Race crew of the Oxford University Women 's Boat Club to victory over the aft of Cambridge. For men, he could control the second Oxford team ( "Isis" ) in the race of substitutes to victory over the second crew from Cambridge ( " Goldie " ) in 2002.

In 2003 he came first in the first team of Oxford ( "Dark Blues" ) at the Boat Race used. He won the Olympic silver medal in Beijing in 2008 and a bronze medal at the World Rowing Championships in 2007. According to the Beijing Games, he interrupted his career initially for one year. During this time his cancer was diagnosed and treated. In 2012, he wanted to qualify as helmsman of the men's rowing eight for the Summer Olympic Games in London. He could no longer control sufficiently precise by the cancer treatment but due to a visual impairment and therefore was not nominated.
