Affero General Public License

The GNU Affero General Public License, short AGPL, is a derivative of the General Public License (GPL ) license for Free Software copyleft. It was designed in its original form by the company Affero together with the Free Software Foundation (FSF ) to protect the user's freedom for software that is provided as a service over a network is available, but will not be in the proper sense. This is not guaranteed by the GPL.

Section 13 requires that the source code of the licensed under AGPL work all users of the work in the network must be made available. For example, as is the work of a content management system that runs on a server on the Internet. The clients have no direct access to the application executable files, but only on the issue, therefore, meets the obligation not to disclose the source code of the GPL. The availability of the source code for all users is secured in such cases by the AGPL.

Relationship

For GPL

The only difference is the GPL Article 13, which ensures compatibility between the GPL and AGPL in two licenses, and in the AGPL beyond the additional obligation regulates to provide the source code. The combination of code are licensed under the GPL v3 and AGPL v3 is possible that additional obligation to publish the source code of the AGPL then hits but also those parts which are under the GPL.

The FSF favors the use of the AGPL against the GPL. Originally there were plans to incorporate a clause directly in the GPL v3, which was rejected by many users to be impractical.

For the original license

Relationship to the original Affero General Public License ( AGPL v1 and v2 ): The GNU AGPL v3 ( Issue 3, English version 3 ) is a public license by the FSF. The previous editions were published by Affero, albeit with the assistance of the FSF, and are therefore not compatible with the respective outputs of the GNU GPL. The AGPL v2 is upwardly compatible with the GNU AGPL, however, v3, because it contains a similar clause. ( This clause is also the reason for the retention of the name " Affero " in the official GNU version of the license. )
