The Africa Open is a golf tournament on the Sunshine Tour, which was held for the first time in February 2008, designed by Gary Player championship course at the Fish River Sun Country Club near Port Alfred, South Africa.
To raise the profile of the tournament, it has been held since 2009 in January at the East London Golf Club in East London. In 2009, the Africa Open prize money of five million rand, which is more than four times the opening event. The Sunshine Tour hoped that one could thus attract a stronger field of players and achieve cooperation with the European Tour in the following years.
In October 2009 it was announced that the Africa Open in 2010 would include the calendar for the European Tour. It was the third of four tournaments of the so-called South African swing and is since then instead of the Alfred Dunhill Championship and South African Open and the week before the Joburg Open. The prize money for 2011 was 1,000,000 euros.
