African Nations Championship

The African Nations Championship (French Champion d' Afrique des Nations, English African Nations Championships CHAN short ) is an African soccer tournament and was presented by the CAF as a new tournament for African teams in 2007. Only players are allowed to play, the play in the national championships of their home countries. The tournament alternates with that of the African Cup every year from. The first African Championship of Nations was held from February 22 to March 8, 2009. It was hosted by the Ivory Coast. Eight nations took part; since the 2011 tournament, however, the number of teams is sixteen.

Following the decision of the CAF to host the African Cup of Nations in 2013 in odd-numbered years, the Nations Cup has been moved from 2014 in accordance straight years.

Format

The CAF divides the country for the qualification in 6 zones ( North Zone, West Zone A, Zone B West, Central Zone, Zone Central East and South Zone ). Since 2011, the tournament will be played with 16 teams. The areas north and west will each receive two places, the other four zones, three launch sites.

In current mode, introduced the so far last tournament in 2011 in Sudan, the teams will be drawn into four groups, in which each team plays once against each other. The third and fourth placed teams from the group get out of the competition, the First and Second each group come to the quarterfinals. The losers of the semifinals will play for the third place in the tournament, and the winners of the two semi-finals meet in the final and determine the tournament winner.

The Championship of Nations system is the same as the FIFA Confederations Cup.

1 The Tournament 2013 has been postponed so that this does not conflict with the early of 2014 to 2013 African Cup of Nations 2014. The tournament will always be held in 2014 in even years.
