Aglaonema commutatum, leaves and fruits

The Aglaonema ( Aglaonema ) is a tropical plant genus in the family Araceae ( Araceae ). The botanical genus name refers to the bright filaments and is derived from the Greek words for agláos gorgeous and NEMA for thread from. Species of this genus are popular as houseplants because they thrive in shady locations and their leaves are beautifully drawn.

Dissemination and use

Aglaonema species are widespread in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia (Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Southern China to Thailand).

As an ornamental plant in parks and gardens it is used in tropical countries. In frost- prone areas it thrives only as a houseplant in heated rooms. They are also very suitable for hydroponics.

Description

Habitus and sheets

Aglaonema species are evergreen, perennial herbaceous plants. Most species grow upright, a few species with shallow creeping stem axis. The plants reach heights of growth between 40 cm and 120 cm.

The spirally arranged, simple, ovate to lanceolate leaves usually have long petioles. The characteristic pattern of up to 30 cm long leaves makes Aglaonema species and cultivars to a popular foliage plant. Depending on the species and variety, different polka dots and marbling found in white- silvery to light green to rich green background.

Inflorescence and fruit

They are monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). The relatively inconspicuous inflorescences are composed of inflorescence stem, piston and spathe. The inflorescence stem is shorter than the petioles. The pale white piston ( spadix ) appears in a creamy white to green bract ( spathe ), the typical shape of the inflorescences in the arum family. On the piston, there is a female sterile and male portion, each with unisexual flowers. There shall be red or orange single-seeded berries.

Toxicity

All plant parts are poisonous. The plant sap can cause skin irritation.
