Alexander Fomichev

Alexander Jurjewitsch Fomitschow (Russian Александр Юрьевич Фомичёв; born February 19, 1979 in Moscow, Russian SFSR ) is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender, who plays for THK Tver in the Wysschaja Hockey League since August 2012.

Career

Alexander Fomitschow first went through the junior section of the HK Dynamo Moscow before moving to North America in the summer of 1996. There he stood in the season 1996/97 in goal for the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. During the NHL Entry Draft 1997, he was selected in the summer by the Edmonton Oilers in the ninth round at point 231 and then moved to the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League. For the Hitmen, he completed two seasons as a goalkeeper and reached with his team in the playoffs two years. 1998 eliminated the Hitmen in the Eastern Conference finals from - a year later they won the championship of the WHL, the President's Cup. In the tournament for the Memorial Cup, the Junior Championship of Canada, the Hitmen failed in the final of the Ottawa 67 's.

In the following season Fomitschow was released after a game for Calgary at the Seattle Thunderbirds, where he spent his last junior year. Still holds the record for the Calgary Hitmen Fomitschow for most inserts a goalkeeper during a season and held shots in a season.

Between 2000 and 2002 Fomitschow has been used in various farm teams of the Oilers. He also came to six inserts for the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League, but did not make it to the National Hockey League. Therefore, he decided in 2002 to return to Russia and played for Amur Khabarovsk in the Super League and Perwaja league. At the end of the season 2002 /03 he moved to HK Sibir Novosibirsk.

From 2004 to 2006 Fomitschow played at HK CSKA Moscow. When HK Avangard Omsk he stood from 2006 to 2009 under contract and was mostly goalkeeper. However, in the 2008/ 09 season, he had stiff competition with John Grahame and Adam Svoboda, so that his expiring contract was not renewed in the summer of 2009. He was then committed again by HK Sibir Novosibirsk, but left this in December 2009 and moved to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. For Torpedo Fomitschow played until 2012, before he was taken from THK Tver from the second division under contract.

Internationally

For the Russian national team, he participated in the U18 European Junior Championships in 1997 and the World Championships in 2004 and 2006.
