Alexander

Alexander is a male first name, the ancient Greek form is Ἀλέξανδρος Aléxandros. The name means something like " the (foreign) men ward off " or "protector".

The earliest evidence of Priam 's son in the Homeric Iliad, where rather than Paris is known today and may have received its name from the king of Wilusa Alaksandu. The most important bearers of the name is certainly Alexander the Great. For the female form see Alexandra.

Etymology

Output components of the ancient Greek name Ἀλέξανδρος ( Aléxandros ) are the verb ἀλέξειν ( alexein ) ( fend, protect, defend ) and the noun ὁ ἀνήρ (ho Aner ) ( Man, man), whose genitive singular ἀνδρός (Andros ) is.

Development of the German name

Unlike other Greek names that found their way into the German vocabulary of Christianity (eg Georg / Jörg / Jürgen von Georgios = farmer ), it was with Alexander the less ecclesiastical name that spread the use of the German. Rather, Alexander the Great ( 356-323 BC ), King of Macedonia, the namesake - here, of course, in turn, is not so much the historical figure, but the hero of the so-called Alexander romance. So first was mighty noble and patrician circles Alexander in reading a popular first name.

In the 17th century the name came out of fashion and was only revived in the Romantic ( eg Alexander von Humboldt ). In the German -speaking area developed in the late Middle Ages, from Alexander the short forms Sander, Xander and Zander.

Dissemination

Already at the beginning of the 20th century, the name Alexander was in use in Germany, but not widespread. From the middle of the century, then increased his popularity. From the mid-seventies to the mid- nineties, the name was almost universally among the ten most- awarded Young names of each year. Since the millennium its popularity has declined significantly again.
