Alixan

Alixan is a commune with 2455 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Drôme in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Alixan located in the South of France 71 km southeast of Saint- Étienne, about 11 kilometers northeast of Valence, the seat of sub-prefecture of the arrondissements, and 7.2 kilometers southwest of Bourg -de- Péage, the capital of the canton, on an average height of 194 meters above sea level. The Mairie stands at a height of 189 meters. Neighboring communities of Alixan are Châteauneuf -sur -Isere in the northwest, Chatuzange -le- Goubet in the northeast, Montélier in the south and Saint -Marcel- lès -Valence in the West. The municipality has an area of ​​2828 hectares. Of these, about 2200 are used for agriculture.

History

The fortifications and the castle of Alixan were built on a mound of molasses from the year 915. The other buildings were carried out in circles around the first buildings, so Alixan is seen from the air, a circular city. The name was first mentioned in 1067. At that time the village belonged to the diocese of Valence.

In the 19th century great changes took place, part of the old fortifications were destroyed. 1850 Alixan lost a part of the municipality of Saint -Marcel- lès- Valence.

Today Alixan consists of three rings, stand in the middle of the church Saint -Didier in the 12th century and the courtyard of the castle. The castle was greatly changed over time and now houses the Mairie.
