Altar (Sunn O))) and Boris album)
Altar is a collaboration of the two Drone Doom bands Sunn O))) and Boris. The songs were written and recorded by both bands. The album was released in various versions. The version of Daymare Records includes the bonus track The Sinking Belle ( White Sheep), which is available on any other version.
On 10 December 2007 the album was presented at a show in London with some guest musicians from the album. In this show, a limited edition of 500 pieces 3 LP Picture Disc was sold.
Formation
In addition to the two bands Sunn O))) and Boris, many of guest musicians on the album available, such as Kim Thayil ( Soundgarden ), Joe Preston ( Earth, Thrones, The Melvins, High on Fire), Phil Wanscher and Jesse Skyes (both Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter ), and the many years Sunn O))) Leaders TOS Niewnhuizen and Rex Ritter.
Style
On the album are typical for Sunn O))) deep, played on bass amps, guitars are accompanied by high guitars and vocals. Also unusual for Sunn O))) use of a drum kit is a unique feature. The pace is, as is typical for the genre, very slowly. The music is described as " noise " and " droning wall ".
Reception
The website looks everything2.com altar is the only album the cult album " Earth 2 " equal. Thomas Jurek finds altar emphasize the " HEAVY " more than the "metal" and assigns this " bona fide collaboration" in the Allmusic Guide, four out of five stars. According to Steve dollars from the New York Sun, " the two bands define the boundaries of the genre again by ignoring it ."
The first 3 songs on the album are seen as innovative, while the second half is just repeated.
