Alternative 4 is the fourth studio album by the British band Anathema. It was published on Peaceville Records on June 22, 1998.

Formation and style

As mentioned on the previous Eternity Alternative 4 was recorded with clean vocals. The recordings took place at a time of change in the band. Drums played Shaun Steels, who joined for the recently stepped out John Douglas joined the band. However, Douglas returned to the album recordings. At the same time alternative 4 was the last recording with bassist and songwriter Duncan Patterson, who left the band after the album release and soon founded Antimatter. He was replaced by Dave Pybus. Anathema Alternative 4 worked on increasingly with piano and keyboards, which were recorded by Duncan Patterson and Danny Cavanagh. But even a violin was used, it was played by George Ricci. Andy Duncan programmed drum loops on Empty. At the end of Inner Silence after a few heartbeats follows a half- minute break.

Reception

The website Allmusic awarded three stars out of five. Wolf -Rüdiger Sears wrote in the magazine Rock Hard, the album set new standards. The " inner conflict [ sic] and agony " had " always honest ". After October Rust by Type O Negative is Alternative 4 "was the first superbe heartbreak album for ages and now is already one of the absolute highlights of this year ". He forgave 9.5 out of ten.
