The Silent Enigma is the second studio album by the British band Anathema. It was published in October 1995 with Peaceville Records.

Formation and style

The self-produced album was recorded in Newcastle, only to ... Alone found additional recordings in Liverpool instead. Mixed it was in the studio The Academy in Dewsbury by Mags. During the recording of The Silent Enigma singer Darren White left the band. Guitarist Vincent Cavanagh took over the vocals, which was created in comparison to Growling Whites as hoarse shouting. The songwriting has been refined on the album compared to the first album and stood out about the genre colleagues such as Paradise Lost. The songs are mostly slow, but partly also fast death metal passages are present. Alone ... however, contains acoustic guitars and string instruments as well as female vocals, the latter is one of the typical elements of Gothic Metal. Rebecca Wilson sang it on. In Shroud of frost there is a spoken-word part, which was acquired by Deryk Fullwood.

Reception

In the magazine Rock Hard Michael Rensen wrote that the band had " evolved audibly ," Cavanagh replace White " despite limited vocal capabilities very efficient ."
