Amazonas (Region)

The Amazon Region (Spanish: Región Amazon, the Amazon suyu Quechua ) is a region in northwestern Peru. Covering an area of ​​39,249 km ² live 398,700 inhabitants (according to 2005 census ). The capital is Chachapoyas.

Geography

The area was established as a department on 21 November in 1832 and named after the current Amazon which, however, only arises from the confluence of the Marañón, Huallaga and Ucayali in the region of Loreto. Only the Marañón river crosses the Amazon region. The south of the region lies in the Andes, the North and Northeast flattens slowly - crossed by individual mountain ranges - in the direction of the Amazon Basin from. In the West, the Amazon is bordered by the river Marañón and in the north to Ecuador joins.

Climate

Although the Amazon region is home to many different climate types, such as tropical forests and high mountains, a change from rain and dry seasons can be observed. The rainy season lasts approximately from November to March, the dry season from March to October. The regional capital Chachapoyas is contrary to popular belief not in the tropical rainforest but in a climate that is referred to in Spanish as " Ceja de Selva", which means as much as " eyebrow of the jungle ". That is, it is on top of the mountain, behind which it flattens in the direction of the rainforest.

Economy

Amazon is a region with agricultural potential. The economy is almost entirely from agriculture and livestock. In warmer and water- rich parts of rice is grown in other parts there are potatoes, corn, wheat, yucca, coffee, coca, bananas and many different types of fruit, especially citrus fruits. There are also some places fishing, timber production, trade and tourism. The most important hydroelectric plant in the area is found in Caclic the river Utcubamba in the province of Chachapoyas and has a capacity of 1.5 megawatts. According to a study by the Ministry of Energy and Mines 55.4 % of the inhabitants of the Amazon are connected to the electricity grid.

Traffic

In addition to bridges, roads and fords there are in the region of the Amazon also several river ports: Rentema ( Bagua ), Nazareth ( Bagua ), Choros ( Utcubamba ) and Galilea ( Condorcanqui ).
