Anadolu Efes SK

Anadolu Efes Spor Kulübü (until 2011 Efes Pilsen Spor Kulübü ) is the most successful Turkish basketball club, based in Istanbul.

History

Efes Pilsen was founded in 1976 through the acquisition of financially troubled second division club Kadiköyspor. 1978 rose Efes Pilsen without a single defeat in the first Turkish basketball league on. In the season 1978/1979 the club already celebrated its first championship in the premier league.

His greatest success of the club in the 1990s. In addition to numerous national titles Efes Pilsen has established itself on the international level.

On March 16, 1993 Efes Pilsen reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in Turin, which was lost to the Greek opponents Aris Saloniki with 50-48.

In 1996, three years after the first final game, Efes Pilsen won the Korac Cup as the first Turkish club team. The final against Italian opponents Stefanel Milano was played in two games. The first game in Istanbul on 6 March 1996 with Efes won 76-68. The return match on March 13 in Milan lost Efes Pilsen with 70-77, but had overall in the nose with a point at the front and was thus able to take the trophy to Istanbul. For cadres of the winning team included, inter alia, Petar Naumoski, Ufuk Sarica (from the 10/11 season coach of Efes Pilsen ), Murat Evliyaoğlu, Mirsad Türkcan, Volkan Aydin and Hüseyin besøk. Also in the squad belonged to the deceased on 10 July 2000 at the summer camp of the Orlando Magic in Los Angeles as a result of a heart attack power forward and Rucker Park legend Conrad McRae.

Turkey's record champions won 13 times the champion nine times and the Turkish Cup.

The club has produced many important players such as Mehmet Okur and Hidayet Türkoğlu. Both players are active in the NBA. In Europe known players like Mirsad Türkcan and Hüseyin besøk also come from the youth section of the club.

Before the season 2011/2012 the club name was changed to Anadolu Efes SK. The name change was necessary because the Turkish legislature had adopted more stringent rules on the advertising of alcohol and tobacco. The brand of beer Efes Pilsen could therefore no longer be used in the club name.
