Andalgalá Department

The department Andalgalá located in the center of the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the department of Santa María, on the east by the province of Tucumán, in the south of the departments Ambato and Poman and to the west by the department of Belén.

The capital of the department is the same Andalgalá.

Population

According to estimates by the INDEC, the population rose from 17,102 (2001) to 17,839 inhabitants in 2005.

History

Andalgalá was founded on March 1, 1822 by Don Crisanto Gómez.

Economy

Livestock and mining are the two mainstays of the economy. The mine Capillitas is the highest mineral mine in Argentina. In essence, the Rhodochrosite stone is mined, in addition to 87 other minerals, including the Catamarcait, a mineral, which was named after the province of Catamarca.
