André Fleury (organist)

André ( Édouard Antoine Marie) Fleury ( born July 25, 1903 in Neuilly -sur -Seine; † August 6, 1995 in Le Vésinet ) was a French composer, pianist, organist and music teacher.

Life

André Fleury received his organistic training first as a private student of Henri Letocart, a pupil of César Franck, and later with André Marchal and Louis Vierne. At the Conservatoire de Paris Fleury was added to the organ class of Eugène Gigout and finally received a first prize in organ playing and improvisation at Gigouts successor Marcel Dupré in 1926. Simultaneously, he studied composition with Paul Vidal. Since 1920, Fleury was assistant of Eugène Gigout at the Paris church of St. Augustine, and, in the same function, in Ste. Clotilde ( for Charles Tournemire ). In 1930 he was appointed titular organist at St. Augustine in 1941 also professor at the École Normale de Musique in Paris. After the end of World War II Fleury and his wife left for health reasons Paris and settled in Dijon. In 1949, he succeeds by Émile Poillot as titular organist at the cathedral, is a professor of piano (later also organ) at the Conservatory of Dijon. In 1971 he was appointed at the invitation of Jean Guillou for co- titular organist at St. Eustache in Paris and was also a professor of organ at the Schola Cantorum and the appointment as titular organist at the Cathedral in Versailles. André Fleury died in 1995 at the age of 92 years in Le Vésinay and was buried in Arcy- sur- Cure.

As a composer, Fleury wrote numerous works for organ, many of which are, however, still unpublished. His career as a concert organist led him throughout Europe. He played the premieres of the organ sonata by Darius Milhaud, the Scherzo, Op 2 by Maurice Duruflé, and the organ cycle La Nativité du Seigneur by Olivier Messiaen ( after the first performance by Jean Langlais, Daniel - Lesur and Jean -Jacques Grunenwald 1935 in Paris). Among his most famous pupils were Gavoty Bernard, Pierre and Daniel - Lesur Cochereau.
