Annibale De Gasparis

Annibale De Gas Paris (also de Paris gas; born April 9, 1819 in Bugnara at Sulmona; † 21 March 1892 in Naples ) was an Italian astronomer.

After attending the seminars in Sulmona and Chieti 1838 he went to Naples to study at an engineering school. From 1840 he was Astronomo alunno at the Observatory of Capodimonte. His first mathematical publication appeared in 1845, for his treatise on the orbit of the asteroid Vesta (ad honorem laurea ) awarded him the University of Naples in 1846 an honorary doctorate. From 1860 to his retirement in 1889 he was Professor of Astronomy, Geodesy and Mathematical Geography at the University of Naples. From 1864 to 1889 De Gas was director of the Paris Observatory of Capo di Monte, Naples, where he worked as one of the leading astronomers since 1855. He discovered nine asteroids (see list of asteroids ).

In 1851 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1861 he was appointed Senator of the Kingdom. Since 1858 he was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei, 1875, he became a full member. Since 1849 he was a member of the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples. Furthermore him the Order of the Crown of Italy (2 steps), the Order of St. Maurice and Lazarus (2 levels), civil Merit of Savoy and the Red Eagle Order of Prussia and the Brazilian Order of the Rose were awarded.

In his memory, the 30 km wide crater on the moon de Gas Paris, after this the moon groove system of gas Rimae de Paris, as well as the asteroid ( 4279 ) De Gas Paris were named.
