Archamps

Archamps is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Archamps is located at 531 m above sea level, about eight kilometers south of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on a terrace at the northwest foot of the Salève, at the Drize, at the edge of the Genevois, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​10.69 square kilometers municipal area includes a portion of the Genevois. The northern boundary runs along the edge of the plain of the Geneva Basin in a valley connecting the lowlands of Drize the east and the Chamarande in the West. From here, the municipality's area extends south on the plateau-like terrace of Archamps. Further south the slope rises gently at first, later very steeply to the Grand Salève. On the broad ridge of Salève is achieved with 1354 m the highest peak of Archamps.

To Archamps next to the original village also includes the settlements Blécheins (621 m) and Chotard (625 m) at the bottom of the northwest slope of the Salève. Neighboring communities of Archamps are Collonges -sous -Salève and La Muraz in the east, Le Sappey and Beaumont in the south, Neydens and Saint -Julien -en- Genevois in the west and the Swiss community Bardonnex in the north.

History

Archamps only became an independent municipality in 1836. Before that, it belonged to Collonges -sous -Salève.

Attractions

The village church got its present shape in 1848 when new building in the neoclassical style. Next to the church is the rectory dating from the 18th century.

Population

With 2276 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Archamps one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the 1960s, a continuous increase in population was recorded. Outside the old town center created numerous houses.

Economy and infrastructure

Archamps was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are various companies of small and medium enterprises. On the plateau west of the village was built in the last decades of the Site d' Archamps, a technology park with more than 150 companies from the fields of computer science, telecommunications and electronics. Many employed persons are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva - Annemasse, their work.

The village region has a very well developed. It is located above the main road N206 that runs from Annemasse along the Swiss border to Saint -Julien -en- Genevois. The A40 motorway crosses the municipality, the next port is located at a distance of approximately one kilometer. Archamps had a station on the railway line Annemasse - Bellegarde.
