La Muraz

La Muraz is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

La Muraz located at about 641 m above sea level. M., about 10 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is in the valley of Viaison ( left tributary of the Arve ), at the eastern foot of the Salève, north of the high plateau of Bornes.

The area of ​​14.38 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the lower west Arvetals. From southwest to northeast, the area is traversed in an open valley from Viaison. To the east of this valley extends the communal land on a broad ridge of the plateau Bornes (up to 900 m above sea level. M. ), the partially forested ( Bois d' Yvre ), but is mainly consisted of meadow land. To the west, the municipality's area covers over a densely wooded hillside down to the broad crest of the Salève. Here it is with 1307 m above sea. M. reached the highest peak of La Muraz.

At La Muraz addition to the actual village also includes the settlements Le Feu (900 m above sea level. M. ) on a ridge on the eastern slope of the Salève and Le Mont ( 787 m above sea level. M. ) on the eastern slope of the valley of the Viaison. Neighboring communities of La Muraz are Monnetier -Mornex in the north, Reignier- Ésery in the east, and Arbusigny Le Sappey in the south and Archamps and Collonges -sous -Salève in the West.

History

The municipality of La Muraz was settled very early. In the Iron Age Iron ore was mined at Salève. There wall foundations were discovered, which are backdate to the time of Allobrogians. The village is mentioned in a document but only in the 15th century.

Attractions

The medieval church of Saint -Martin in 1871 destroyed by fire and later rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style to 1885 again.

Population

With 1045 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) La Muraz one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. In the first half of the 20th century, the population increased continuously from (1901 counted La Muraz still 752 inhabitants, in 1968 only 367). Since the early 1970s, however, a significant increase in population was recorded thanks to the proximity of agglomeration Geneva again.

Economy and infrastructure

La Muraz was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area, but especially in the Geneva - Annemasse, their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a local road that leads from Monnetier -Mornex along the eastern foot of the Salève after Cruseilles. Further road links exist with Arbusigny and La Croisette on the Salève. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of around 10 km.
