Arnulf Rainer

Arnulf Rainer ( born December 8, 1929 in Baden bei Wien ) is a contemporary Austrian painter. Known are its overpainting.

Life

Rainer attended from 1940 to 1944, the National Political Education Institute in Traiskirchen. He left the school because he was forced by an art teacher to draw from nature.

In 1947 he first saw international contemporary art at a British Council exhibition in Klagenfurt (Paul Nash, Francis Bacon, Stanley Spencer, Henry Moore). At the request of his parents, he studied from 1947 to the Federal Trade School in Villach building and made the 1949 financial statements. In the same year he was admitted to the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, which he already left again because of an artistic controversy with the wizard Korunka after one day. Shortly thereafter, he applied to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, but also left this class three days after passing the entrance examination, because his works have been referred to as degenerate.

Together with Ernst Fuchs, Anton Lehmden, Arik Brauer, Wolfgang Hollegha, Markus Prachensky and Josef Mikl he founded in 1950 the dog group with which he exhibited in 1951 for the first ( and only) time. The exhibition was held in the rooms of Viennese society for science and art. In the summer of 1951 he visited along with Maria Lassnig André Breton in Paris. In February 1952 Rainer presented his works in the gallery Kleinmayr in Klagenfurt. In March of the same year he was given a solo exhibition at the Gallery Franck in Frankfurt am Main, which is regarded as one of the first manifestations of the Informal Art in Central Europe today. In this published catalog were Rainers text manifestos " Painting in order the painting" and " The one against the other" printed.

In 1953 he learned in Vienna the Catholic priest Monsignor Otto Mauer, a year later the Gallery St. Stephan founded, with which he promoted the Austrian avant-garde critical. In November 1955, Wall Rainers opened first solo exhibition at the Galerie St. Stephan. Wolfgang Hollegha, Markus Prachensky, Josef Mikl and Arnulf Rainer founded in 1956 the painters ' Galerie St. Stephan " under the direction of Otto Mauer.

In the years 1953-1959 he lived in seclusion in a furniture -less abandoned villa of his parents in Gainfarn in Bad Vöslau, 25 kilometers south of Vienna. There he began the work group of the reductions considered the first step of his world famous painting over. In September 1959, he founded with Ernst Fuchs and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the " Pintorarium " as " Creatorium for the cremation of the Academy". The Pintorarium remained until 1968 exist.

1961 Arnulf Rainer was sentenced in court in Wolfsburg because of the public overpainting of a prize-winning picture. From 1963, Rainer worked in various studios in Berlin ( West), Munich and Cologne. In 1966 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for graphics. In 1967 he moved into a large studio in Mariahilferstrasse in Vienna. A year later, his first retrospective was held in Vienna in the Museum of the 20th century.

Rainer was 1974, the Art Prize of the City of Vienna will be awarded, but he refused to attend the handover ceremony, him the prize was revoked. In 1977 he took part in documenta 6, a year later, he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. In November 1978, he was awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize " in recognition of his work in the field of visual arts ." 1980 Rainer earned his studios in Upper Austria and Bavaria. In 1981 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and became a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Since 1978 he is member of the Austrian Art Senate. In 1995 he settled emeritus at his own request, after unidentified in his studio in the Academy several of his images in black and painted over on a the statement " AND BECAUSE HE DECIDED TO BE campaigner " left behind.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday organized a major retrospective of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Arts Forum in Vienna. Since 2002, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich Rainer dedicates a separate room where some of his works are permanently displayed. The following year, Rainer received by Georg Baselitz and Sigmar Polke, the Rhenus Art Prize for his oeuvre. 2004 Rainer honorary doctorate from the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and in 2006 an honorary doctorate of theology of the Catholic- Theological Private University Linz, he was awarded as the first non-Spanish artist, he received the 2006 Aragon- Goya Award for his life's work and his artistic relationship to Francisco de Goya.

In September 2009, the Arnulf Rainer Museum opened in Baden near Vienna.

For most of the year living and working Arnulf Rainer in Enzenkirchen. He has transformed into a studio for his work a part of a farm. In the winter he works in Tenerife.

Rainer was a member of the Lord Jim Lodge.

Work

After initially turning to Surrealism Rainer Tachism and Informal approached to. Since the early 1950s he painted his own and others' images and photos. This particularly Fotoübermalungen of self-portraits have become known, which are referred to as Face Farces. The Hiroshima - cycle, a series of drawings and photos of the destroyed city, was shown from 1982 in seventeen European cities. In his late work, Rainer worked intensively with photography to have first order models for his revisions, later they will no longer be painted over and are working independently.
