Arsenyev

Arsenyev (Russian Арсеньев ) is a town with 56,750 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Primorye Territory in Russia's Far East.

Geography

Arsenyev located on the Arsenjewka, a tributary of the Ussuri River, about 300 km northeast of the city of Vladivostok and 60 km southeast of the nearest town Spassk- Dalni.

History

1902, the village was founded Semjonowka ( Семёновка ) by Russian settlers on the present area. 1938 Semjonowka united with neighboring villages to a so-called workers' settlement, which received the city status in 1952. At the same time the place in honor of the Russian ethnologist and geographer Vladimir Arsenyev (1872-1930) was renamed in Arsenyev. The scientist had opened up the region on his research trips. 1972 the formerly Daubiche hot end river that flows through the city was renamed in Arsenjewka.

Economy and infrastructure

Arsenyev is an important industrial center with the helicopter factory Progress (manufacturer, inter alia, the models Mil Mi -34, Kamov Ka-50, Kamov Ka -52) and with operations of mechanical engineering, woodworking and food production.

The city also hosts a branch of Far Eastern State Academy of Economics and Administration as well as a branch of the Far Eastern State Technical University. There is a regional road link and a rail connection to Vladivostok on Ussurijsk.
