Augsburg Western Woods Nature Park

The Natural Park of Augsburg - Western forests is one of over 100 nature parks in Germany.

The regulation of the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment August 22, 1988, a 1175 km ² large area west of Augsburg as a " natural park Augsburg - Western Woods " from. He is next to the Nagelfluhkette the only nature park in Bavarian Swabia. Well-known landscapes in the nature park are the Holzwinkel to Welden, the Reischenau to Dinkelscherben and the perennials in the south.

43 % of the area of the nature reserve is covered by forest. Per minute, about one cubic meter of wood grows added. The landscape of the Natural Park is characterized by wooded slopes and mostly running from south to north creek valleys. It is part of the Central Swabian gravel Riedel and hill country.

Activities

Hiking

Over a thousand kilometers of marked trails exist in the nature park. In addition to over fifty circular routes following theme paths are of particular importance:

  • The Swabian Allgäu hiking trail leads from Augsburg through the landscape of perennials to Sonthofen in the Allgäu.

Cycling

For cyclists are in the nature park far more than a thousand kilometers of lines available. Some of the selected main routes are:

In 1992 opened the Nature Park House, which is located south of Gessertshausen in an outbuilding of the Cistercian abbey Oberschönenfeld, the permanent exhibition is nature and man shown in the Nature Park. In addition, a typical local perennials house was rebuilt and opened as a museum in the monastery from 1974 to 1980 with the " Glaser Schusterhaus " from Döpshofen.
