August Schmarsow

August Schmarsow ( born May 26, 1853 in Schildfeld ( today Vellahn ), Mecklenburg -Schwerin, † January 19, 1936 in Baden -Baden ) was a German art historian. Throughout his life, Schmarsow sought a knowledge of the essence of art and to the definition of the essence of art-historical terminology. In addition, the art historian Schmarsow postulated as part of his research a creative context in art.

Career

He was educated in Zurich, Strasbourg and Bonn and from 1881 was professor of Art History in Göttingen, a professor there from 1882, in Breslau from 1886. 1892 he went to Florence in 1893 to Berlin. In 1894 he followed a call to Leipzig, where he taught for several decades as an adjunct professor.

In 1888 he campaigned for the establishment of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence. This institute (now part of the Max Planck Society) promotes the exploration of historical Italian art and architecture.

Works

Schmarsow is the author of biographies of Pierre Jean David d' Angers, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, and Pierre Paul Prud'hon in Robert Dohmes art and artists; Raphael and Pinturicchio in Siena ( 1880).
