History

The community Herzogenaurach has been inhabited since ancient times. Already 1000-800 BC, copper was mined on the chalice Alpe. Most of the former metal deposits were exported. From that time are still present objects, which can be viewed in the local museum of Kitzbühel. After mining has been set, the settlers from the region withdrew.

It was not until the 7th century AD, new settlers came and Herzogenaurach was first documented in 1289 as " Orwiorwe ". 1464 is referred to as part of the " Jochberger district " in Jochberger tax book Herzogenaurach. Until 1540 Herzogenaurach belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria. In the same year the place was still the County of Tyrol.

Herzogenaurach in 1833 became an independent municipality and in this time the mining was revived. By 1926, more copper was mined, then changed the market situation and consequently ended these activities.

Church History

The parish Herzogenaurach originally belongs to the deanery of St. Johann in Tirol. From 1217 to 1807 belonged to the deanery and parish to the diocese Chiemsee, before and after the Archdiocese of Salzburg.

It is interesting that to 1665, not a single priest lived in the town. Only when a contract was signed with the Dominicans in Kitzbuhel, you led a regulated Sunday services and catechism classes. In 1739 they founded the Skapulierbruderschaft "in honor of the Holy Trinity to the rescue of the captive Christians." This Brotherhood was a major share in the ecclesiastical life of Auracher. In 1722 the church was raised to Expositur. 1787 Herzogenaurach Vicariate was and since 1891 the parish is independent.

The earliest mention of the church, which took place already in 1324 is not the date of its construction. Maybe a house of worship in Oberaurach has previously been established. In 2000, archaeological excavations took place, which bring the proof that the Auracher parish church, as it exists today was built in the 14th century. Vorläuferbauten were not discovered. It is worth noting, however, that the church had never changed in the years after 1324, although the population had tripled. It is likely that the nave was originally closed by a flat wooden beamed ceiling. Only the zweijochige chancel was already arched. The tower, which stands on the north side was lower at this time than today.

The patronage of the church of St.. Rupert. It is probably related to the long-distance transport of salt. On the one hand was the "white gold " over the Pass Thurn of Pinzgau, on the other hand you transporting it on the Samerweg of Saalbach over the top riders yoke.
