Aurélio Granada Escudeiro

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro ( born May 19, 1920 in Alcains; † August 25, 2012 in Ponta Delgada on the Portuguese Azores island of São Miguel) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Angra.

Life

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Gavião, Alcains and Olivais. He received on 17 January 1943 in Gavião the priesthood. He was a pastor in Gavião ( 1943-44 ) and in Ortigas, Mação ( 1944-1948 ). From 1948 to 1952 he was professor of religious studies at the Lyceum in Castelo Branco and two other universities. He was involved for 15 years, the Catholic Action and was its Secretary-General. From 1964 to 1974 he was also Secretary General of the Nacional da Associação Católica Internacional da Juventude ao Serviço feminines and Nacional das Obras para Católicas Portuguesas as Migrações. In 1974 he was appointed secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Migration.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 18 March 1974 Coadjutor Bishop of Angra and Titular Bishop of Drusiliana. The Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal António Ribeiro consecrated him bishop on 26 May 1974; Agostinho Joaquim Lopes co-consecrators were de Moura CSSp, Bishop of Portalegre - Castelo Branco, and Manuel Alfonso de Carvalho, Bishop of Angra.

He founded in 1975 the Regional Secretariat for Pastoral Care of Migrants and 1976, the Diocesan Commission for Social Communications. He engaged in particular for refugee assistance due to the problems with the African decolonization on the Portuguese Azores Islands; authorized by the Apostolic Letter of Pope Paul VI. ( Santae Regimen Ecclesiae ).

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro was a member of the Episcopal Commission on Migration and Tourism of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 30 June 1979, 37th Bishop of Angra. Pope John Paul II was his guest during the pilgrimage in 1991 to the Azores islands of Terceira and São Miguel.

Aurélio Granada Escudeiro was a freeman of the city of Angra do Heroismo. He was the initiator of the festival " Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres on Sao Miguel ," one on the 5th Sunday after Easter largest annual Island Festival of the island of Sao Miguel.

On 9 April 1996, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. He died at the age of 92 years from the effects of pneumonia in the house of the Fraternity of Ponta Delgada.
