Bağcılar is the capital of the district of the Turkish province of İstanbul as well as a district on the European side of İstanbul. According to the last census Bağcılar had 720 819 inhabitants (as of December 2008).

Population Development

The migration took place since the 1970s, from Anatolia and the population rose from 8,593 in 1970 to 720 890 in 2008. This means that the population has since gone up 84 -fold. The district was founded in 1992 and is currently the most populous county and district of Istanbul and all over Turkey. Since the 1990s, more and more Gecekondus have been demolished in Bağcılar on whose surface was built three -to six- storey buildings. 46% of the residents of Bağcılar come from Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia as well as 28 % of the Black Sea region. 30% of men in Bağcılar are illiterate, with women the proportion is 58%.
